THE TRAILS ON ÎLE AUX LIÈVRES
Île aux Lièvres offers over 40 km (25 miles) of hiking trails in a protected, unspoiled natural habitat. The trails are designed so that hikers can experience the great topographic features and floral diversity of the island, while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the St. Lawrence Estuary.
Choose to stay at our campgrounds, cottages or at the Auberge or simply come for the day to explore the trails.
Du Jardin trail is a less than one-hour walk. It leads past magnificent terraces covered with lichen and lady's-slippers. If you look closely, you will notice dwarfed "bonzai-like" trees. These are very old spruce trees, pruned and sculpted by the browsing of wild hares. This trail winds its way up to the highest central ridge of the island from which you can admire the St. Lawrence River.
Des Eiders trail will lead you to a quiet rocky cove where eiders seek peace and tranquility.
De la Mer trail follows the shoreline. Here, you can feel the sea breeze and marvel at the sea shells, native plants and sea birds.
La Grande Course trail spans the island from east to west. On the eastern tip of the island, gray seals and common seals rest on the rocky reefs. On the western tip, sea birds and white whales await...
De la Corniche trail runs along a 40 m (130 feet) high escarpment on the north side of the island. From here, you can look down over the north channel of the St. Lawrence and admire the panorama of the beautiful Charlevoix region. Watch carefully for white whales, the flicker of light from Cap de la Tête-au-chien lighthouse, and perhaps even the blow of a minke whale.
PLEASE NOTE...
The level of difficulty ranges from novice to expert. For more experienced hikers, Île aux Lièvres offers plenty of adventure!
